Prelude (2011)

Medium: soprano and piano

Length: ~2.5 min

Prelude is essentially a love song to words and text. The composer's mother was a librarian and she has loved books and words since she was very small. The comparison of words and birds figures prominently in the text, but the avian idea is only hinted at through the occasional high trill or figure rather than the use of obvious bird-like musical gestures. The harmonies and occasional 'blue' notes are a nod to the wonderful ballads found in the Great American Songbook. There is also a brief quote in the piano at the very end from the hymn "How Can I Keep from Singing" with the obligatory 'blue' note.
