The Cowboy and His God (2019
Medium: tenor and piano
Length: ~10.5 min
While researching cowboy songs for a past project, the composer was surprised to discover numerous songs or texts displaying a deeply spiritual side to the cowboy. The Cowboy and His God is a set of two songs along those lines. The first is a loose arrangement of a folk tune and has a more humorous bent to it as the cowman
asks for several blessings specific to his profession. The second is an original setting of a traditional text that runs the gamut of emotion including serenity, loneliness, reverence, anger and frustration at society’s scorn, and contemplation of the morning of the birth of Christ, when shepherds were those who saw the star and heard the angels.
