The title of …and the stars shall withdraw their shining is drawn from the book of Joel in the Old Testament, chapter 3, verse 15. The piece is in ternary (ABA) form. Both A sections are based on the tonic note D and make use of the raised fourth scale degree. The first A section is in D-Lydian while the return of the A section is in D-minor. The middle section is in a triple meter and based around the note ‘A’ although not in an identifiable mode. It was composed for Jeff Gleason in 2019.
