Fantasy on Two English Hymn Tunes (2017)

Medium: wind ensemble with optional organ/piano

Length: ~8.5 min

Growing up as a child, the composer was exposed to all things British (literature, art, legend, poetry, music, and Monty Python) by her English uncle, who although becoming an American citizen when he married her aunt, always retained a deep love of his homeland. She has a strong memory of him coming to his feet, becoming a bit misty-eyed, and belting out "Jerusalem"--a setting of William Blake's "And did those feet in ancient time" composed by Sir Hubert Parry in 1916.

Composed in late 2017, Fantasy on Two English Hymn Tunes for wind ensemble and organ, pairs "Jerusalem" with the traditional hymn tune "King's Lynn." It is

something of an homage to both Ralph Vaughn Williams and the traditional church hymn tune, but with a bit of a modern twist involving several sections of unusual meters and harmonies with added notes.

Fantasy is lovingly dedicated to John Henry Tetstill.
